Vyken approached us to create a modern lamp design that would fit well in contemporary homes. As their first product, the lamp needed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. We needed to keep a focus on clean lines and a minimalist design, and Vyken wanted us to turn to brutalist design principles for the design. We needed to make sure that this lamp would fit in Vyken's future product lineup.

We needed to create a lamp that balanced form with usability. Most lamps are single function, copy and paste designs. Vyken wanted a lamp that would stand out in the market. We had to ensure that the lamp provided adequate lighting while also serving as a statement piece in any room.

After researching modern interior design trends, we realized that most lamps were either too simplistic or overly ornate. There was a gap in the market for a lamp that combined modern aesthetics with functional design. We decided to focus on creating a lamp that would be both a source of light and a piece of art.

After our initial research, we drew out many concept sketches to explore which direction would be best for our goals. We explored various shapes, materials, and lighting techniques. After initially wanting to create a simple, two box shape, we realized that a more intricate design would better fit our goals.

We defined a form language that revolved around triangular facets and edges. This gave the lamp a dynamic and sculptural appearance. We chose materials that would enhance the lamp's modern aesthetic, like as matte concrete for the body and frosted polycarbonate for the shade. The combination of these materials created a striking contrast between the solid, industrial feel of the concrete and the soft, diffused light emitted by the polycarbonate shade. The result is a lamp that feels stable, elemental, and intentional. Simple from afar, intricate up close.

After our first foam prototypes, we realized that the lamp was too complex. The facets didn't follow any rhythm or pattern, and the shade didn't have a clear location. We went back to the drawing board and redesigned the sides to flow into each other and structurally support the shade, without drawing attention away to the body. This resulted in a more cohesive design that focused on the light itself instead of the body.

The GE-1 lamp features a sleek, geometric design with a matte finish. The lamp's body is made from polished concrete. This contrasts with the warmth of the light, creating a balanced aesthetic. The lamp emits a soft, diffused light that is perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere in any room. The shade of the lamp is made from bead-blasted polycarbonate, which resembles frosted glass. If you want more light, the shade is removable. This lets light shine out in a directed beam.

This project establishes the core design language of Vyken, focusing on clean lines, geometric shapes, and a minimalist aesthetic.
